The SMH Heart Center and Emergency Department takes up the two floors of the new wing of the hospital - built with the support of area residents who approved a $25 million bond renewal to finance the construction.
The inpatient, all-private room cardiac facility is on the second floor. It has 38 private rooms and improves local cardiac care through more efficient design; state-of-the-art cardiac cath labs; advanced patient monitoring system; and care delivered by one continuous team from "door to discharge.” All other cardiac services in other areas of the hospital moved into the area formerly occupied by the old emergency department. Now all cardiac services are physically centralized, creating a specialized heart hospital within a full-service acute care hospital.
The physical layout facilitates swifter access and coordination between the ER and cardiology areas, which will be a significant benefit to cardiac patients brought in through the ER. It will make treatment and diagnosis even speedier, crucial to saving heart muscle and lives.
"The new Heart Center advances cardiac patient care by placing the patients at the center of every design and technology decision in ways I’ve never seen before, even in heart-specializing hospitals. The benefit to patients comes not from one thing alone but from the comprehensive services, door to discharge, given by one continuous team of caregivers."Vasanth K.
